Mariam's mother calls her a "harami" various instances in the beginning of the novel. As time goes by, she somewhat gives up and just accepts the things that happen to her in life. Eventually, once Mariam meets Laila and her daughter Aziza, she develops a sentimental attachment to Aziza because they both grew up without the strong connection to a father. In the end, it also allows Mariam to rise above all those stereotypes and become the hero in order to save both Laila and Aziza.
